BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and ice-breaking cutter that patrol the Great Lakes will be in Buffalo to help kick off the 55th annual Western New York Armed Forces Week.

The U.S. Coast Guard station on the Lake Erie waterfront in Buffalo is hosting the celebration, which opens with a ceremony at 12:45 p.m. Sunday at Canalside.

The Coast Guard will provide displays, an on-water response boat demonstration and a flyover by an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter based in Detroit. The 140-foot ice-breaking cutter Neah Bay, based in Cleveland, is also scheduled to be at the waterfront for free public tours.

Armed Forces Week honors those who have served in the military, and this year’s event focuses on Gold Star Mothers, women who have lost a child in service to the country.
