DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Police say a Des Moines woman saved an abandoned guinea pig from being eaten by dogs and that the small animal is now at the Animal Rescue League.

The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/1dCN91X ) that a woman called police to report an abandoned hamster on Tuesday. Officers arrived at an apartment complex, where the woman said a building maintenance worker told her the animal had been abandoned in an apartment, and that he planned to feed it to his dogs.

The woman then took the animal, still in its cage, to her apartment.

Police say the abandoned pet was not a hamster, but a guinea pig. Police are investigating.
