JEREZ, Spain (AP) - Jorge Lorenzo set a track record to clinch his first pole position of the season at the Spanish Moto Grand Prix on Saturday, ahead of two-time defending champion Marc Marquez.

Lorenzo, a two-time champion who has failed to reach the podium in three races this season, steered his Yamaha through the 4.4-kilometer (2.75-mile) Jerez Circuit in a record 1 minute, 37.910 seconds.

It was the Spaniard’s 31st career pole in the top category.

Marquez on his Honda was 0.390 behind, followed by Andrea Iannone.

Points leader Valentino Rossi will start Sunday’s race from fifth.

Rossi has won two of the three races to top the standings with 66 points. Fellow Italians Andrea Dovizioso and Iannone are next on their Ducatis before Lorenzo with 37 and Marquez with 36.

In Moto2, defending champion Tito Rabat took pole with a lap time of 1:42.874, ahead of Alex Rins and Jonas Folger.

In Moto3, Fabio Quartararo got his first career pole with a lap time of 1:46.791 to edge out points leader Danny Kent, who was 0.120 seconds slower. Miguel Oliveira was third.
