SEATTLE (AP) - The defending under-23 world champions from New Zealand pulled ahead early in the race and edged Washington in the men’s final of the Windermere Cup on Saturday.

The New Zealand squad, with an eye on being a force at next year’s Olympics, finished the course on Lake Washington in 5:43.2, with the Huskies coming in second in 5:45.8 and Columbia University finishing third in 6:04.5. New Zealand tried to pull away around the 1,000 meter mark, but Washington was able to make up ground before the 2014 world champions pulled away at the end to win by about six seats.

In the women’s race, Washington - ranked No. 4 in the country - knocked off No. 3 Virginia by more than 3 seconds. The Huskies finished in 6:29.6 while Virginia finished in 6:32.9.
