ATHENS, Ala. (AP) - A northern Alabama man is in critical condition after being shot five times while retrieving personal items from his ex-girlfriend’s Athens residence.

The Limestone County Sherriff’s Department said the victim was shot by 32-year-old Jason Sparkman, the ex-husband of the victim’s ex-girlfriend. The Decatur Daily reports (https://bit.ly/1GFnZGS) Sparkman has been charged with first-degree assault and is being held this morning without bail.

Police said an argument occurred between the victim, the ex-girlfriend and Sparkman while the victim was leaving his ex-girlfriend’s residence.

According to the sheriff’s department, the victim, who lives in East Limestone, was in his vehicle when Sparkman fired 16 times, hitting the victim five times.

It was not immediately clear Saturday if Sparkman had an attorney.
