MANDAN, N.D. (AP) - Two Mandan parents have been charged with felony child abuse after police reported finding two children living in filthy conditions.

Police were called to the home of Justin Thomas and Amanda Thomas after the woman told dispatchers that her husband had assaulted her.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that (https://bit.ly/1AtCLOK ) police found moldy food, garbage, empty alcohol containers, tools and knives scattered on the floor throughout the house. They say there was no food in the fridge and the two children were sleeping on piles of clothes on the floor.

Police took the children from the home and brought them to stay with relatives.

The felony child abuse charge carries a maximum possible sentence of five years.

Justin Thomas has also been charged with misdemeanor simple assault.
