NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (AP) - More than 5,000 people are expected to participate in a charity road race being held in memory of a slain Danvers High School teacher.

Proceeds from the second Step Up For Colleen 5K scheduled for Sunday in her hometown of North Andover will benefit a foundation named for Colleen Ritzer, which provides college scholarships for North Andover or Danvers high school students who reflect her values and plan to become teachers.

Ritzer, a math teacher at Danvers High, was killed in October 2013, allegedly by one of her students who was 14 years old at the time. He has pleaded not guilty and awaits trial.

Last year’s race attracted about 4,000 runners and walkers, which organizers say is a testament to the number of people whose lives Ritzer touched.
