DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - More than 30 years since joining the Dothan Police Department, Steve Parrish has officially taken over as Dothan’s top officer.

The Dothan Eagle reports (https://bit.ly/1AusodH) Parrish was sworn in Friday as the city’s new police chief. More than 200 people attended the ceremony, which took place at the municipal courtroom at the police station.

City commissioners voted 6-1 last month to name Parrish the new chief. He began his police career in Dothan and had been the department’s second-in-command before the promotion.

Mayor Mike Schmitz said Parrish helped maintain unity in the police department when Greg Benton took over as chief five years ago. Parrish had also been a finalist for the chief’s job then, but Schmitz said he “supported Chief Benton in everything he did.”
