LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) - Gibraltar’s appeal to become a FIFA member has been heard at world sport’s highest court, with no timetable set for a ruling.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport says the two sides will now submit further legal arguments after a hearing ended late Thursday.

The case is unlikely to be resolved before the FIFA congress next week in Zurich.

FIFA declined to comment on Friday.

Though Gibraltar is a UEFA member, it is barred from entering FIFA’s 2018 World Cup qualifying program.

Gibraltar would need an urgent CAS verdict in its favor before trying to get a membership request added to the FIFA agenda.

FIFA’s executive committee rejected Gibraltar’s application last September because the governing body’s statutes require the British territory to be an independent country.
