BAY POINT, Calif. (AP) - A woman is dead and eight others injured after they were struck by a truck driver who backed into a crowd in the parking lot of a Northern California night club and restaurant.

A Contra Costa County sheriff’s spokesman says the driver, 21-year-old Martin Bretado-Munoz, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and DUI following the crash in Bay Point early Saturday.

Spokesman Jimmy Lee tells KTVU-TV the suspect backed up at high speeds. His truck also hit two other cars after plowing into the crowd.

The conditions of the injured were not immediately available.

A relative told the Contra Costa Times (https://bayareane.ws/1OQ8ENw ) the woman who died was 24-year-old Laura Gomez, a UC San Francisco cafeteria worker from San Pablo.
