EAST MACHIAS, Maine (AP) - Downeast Maine is ready to celebrate the migration of fish with a race that culminates in a feast of whole-smoked herring.

The Downeast Salmon Federation is asking the public to participate in the third annual Smolt Bolt and Bloater Bash on May 9 at its East Machias Aquatic Research Center.

The race concludes at the center, where refreshments include the smoked alewives that are also called “bloaters.” Organizers say the event is designed to celebrate the migration of Atlantic salmon smolt and river herring.

Registration is $20 and the post-race social is included in the fee.
