MACON, Ga. (AP) - A Macon man now faces a second-degree murder charge after a toddler was shot in a west Bibb County home.

Bibb County sheriff’s officials say 36-year-old Ronnie Howard was cleaning a gun when it discharged, striking 17-month-old Victor Carroll in the head Thursday afternoon.

The child was driven by family members to Navicent Health Medical Center, where he later died.

Authorities say Howard was initially charged with reckless conduct and cruelty to children. They say the reckless conduct charge was upgraded to murder after the child’s death.

WMAZ-TV reports (https://on.wmaz.com/1bq2aCB ) that Howard is the boyfriend of the child’s mother.
