MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Senate has rejected a bid to collect an estimated $2 million a year in bottle deposits that consumers abandon when they don’t redeem their bottles.

Sen. Anthony Pollina offered an amendment to have the state collect the money that now goes to distributors during debate on a tax bill on Friday.

The Senate rejected it after Sen. Christopher Bray argued that the Natural Resources Committee, which he chairs, had not given the proposal sufficient review.
