WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) - Police say a 66-year old man has died after a fire ripped through a Woonsocket apartment house.

Firefighters pulled Gennaro DeLuca out of the fire Tuesday morning, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital. A woman was taken to a hospital. There was no word on her injuries.

Nicholas DeLuca told WPRI-TV (https://bit.ly/1KfeCRj ) that his uncle, a painter, was an outgoing, unorthodox man who was “very loving.” He was one of 10 people who lived in the building.

Police initially said a dog was killed but firefighters rescued 3-year-old Blu and reunited her with her family. The dog was taken to an animal hospital. A resident’s cat also was hurt.

Officials say firefighters were briefly trapped inside because the smoke obscured the staircase.

Police said there was another recent fire at the house. Both are under investigation.
