MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say they’re looking into a possible case of animal abuse in Mesa after three dogs were found locked in a box.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s officials say three pit bulls were found locked inside a wooden box Tuesday on a property.

MCSO’s animal crimes unit arrived on the scene around 3:30 p.m. and deputies let the dogs out of the box.

The dogs are alive and sheriff’s officials say they appear to be healthy and well-cared for.

A neighbor had alerted the Arizona Animal Rescue Alliance and a volunteer came out to assess the situation.

Authorities say the dogs have been allowed to remain on the property.
