EATONTON, Ga. (AP) - The sheriff probing the unsolved beheading and slaying of an elderly middle Georgia couple says he has developed a person of interest in the case.

Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills on Tuesday told WSB-TV (https://bit.ly/1PnerFj ) that someone authorities interviewed in the deaths of Russell and Shirley Dermond wasn’t completely truthful in the statements they made. Sills says there isn’t enough evidence for investigators to begin considering that person a suspect.

Authorities have said 88-year-old Russell Dermond’s headless body was found in the garage of his house on Lake Oconee and investigators determined that he had been killed sometime in the first weekend of May 2014. The body of Dermond’s 87-year-old wife, Shirley, was later found in the lake.
