SOUTH EL MONTE, Calif. (AP) - A man who attacked neighbors with a meat cleaver, killing one and wounding another, has been shot by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies.

He died shortly after 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in South El Monte. His name hasn’t been released.

Authorities tell the San Gabriel Valley Tribune (https://bit.ly/1GZq7yM ) that he attacked a married couple who lived next door.

Arriving deputies saw him chopping at a man in a yard and shot him when he refused to drop the cleaver and moved toward them.

Authorities say deputies shot again after the man got up and came at them again, saying: “you’ll have to kill me.”

A woman was hospitalized with a head wound and her husband died at the scene.

There’s no word yet on what prompted the attack.
