ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Democrat Ethan Berkowitz will be the next mayor of Anchorage after a decisive win over Republican Amy Demboski in a runoff election.

The Alaska Dispatch News reports (https://bit.ly/1IMignt ) that Berkowitz will take over for Mayor Dan Sullivan on July 1.

Berkowitz had more than 59 percent of the vote with 98 percent of the vote counted late Tuesday night. He had a significant lead over Demoski throughout the evening.

Supporters waved signs and applauded wildly when Berkowitz stood on a chair during his campaign party at a downtown restaurant.

He said he wants to unify Anchorage following a divisive end to the mayoral race.

Demboski told a local TV station that she left a congratulatory message on Berkowitz’s phone.
