CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago’s City Council and Mayor Rahm Emanuel have paid tribute to the late Cardinal Francis George.

Aldermen, the mayor and Archbishop Blase Cupich (blayz-SOO’-pich) took turns praising the late leader of the Archdiocese of Chicago during Wednesday’s Chicago City Council meeting. George died last month after a long battle with cancer. Cupich replaced George.

Emanuel said George’s death leaves a “great hole in our city’s fabric.”

Speakers also said George exhibited hope and faith throughout his life. They spoke about how he never complained despite physical limitations caused by polio that he contracted as a boy and cancer later in his life.
