UNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) - A western Pennsylvania county detective has died after he suffered a cardiac emergency while helping to serve federal search warrants as part of a drug investigation.

Paul “P.J.” Koropal worked for the Allegheny County district attorney’s office in Pittsburgh, but was 40 miles away in Uniontown in neighboring Fayette County when he fell ill Tuesday afternoon.

Fayette County Coroner Dr. Philip Reilly says Koropal told his partner he didn’t feel well while filling out some of the warrant paperwork, and went to Uniontown Hospital where he died.

Koropol was an 18-year veteran detective and was part of a law enforcement team serving warrants obtained by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Pittsburgh for 11 locations in Fayette County.

Officials there confirmed the warrants are part of a drug investigation, but wouldn’t release other details.
