MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (AP) - Republicans have their candidate for Berkeley County sheriff.

Local media outlets report Duane Lewis took almost 52 percent of the vote Tuesday to defeat Brian Adams in the GOP runoff for sheriff.

The two were the top two vote-getters in the 14-way Republican primary last month.

Lewis now faces Democrat Anthony Smalls in a June 9 special election.

Former sheriff Wayne DeWitt resigned in February before he was indicted on charges of drunken driving, leaving the scene of a crash and failing to stop for police in an incident last December.
