STORM LAKE, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say a Fort Dodge man gave a Storm Lake car dealer a fake check of more than $70,000 in an attempt to buy two vehicles.

The Storm Lake Police Department says 42-year-old Duane Knowles was arrested Tuesday and charged with first-degree theft. He is accused of using the check in the amount of $71,607 to buy two cars and get the remainder as a refund.

Police say Knowles presented the check Monday at Deanda Auto. The Sioux City Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1QmYPnE ) the vehicles were valued at $36,400, and Knowles requested a refund check of $35,207. Police say the check was deemed false after staff tried to cash it.

Investigation revealed that the check was promotional. Authorities say the two vehicles and the refund check have been recovered from Knowles.
