INKSTER, Mich. (AP) - A judge has scheduled a probable cause hearing for a police officer charged in the beating of a black motorist following a traffic stop in the Detroit suburb of Inkster.

The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says a judge decided Wednesday to set the preliminary examination on May 28 for William Melendez.

Footage from a police dashboard camera (https://bit.ly/1KKzIIi ) showed 57-year-old Floyd Dent being pulled from his car in January and repeatedly punched in the head. The beating wasn’t publicly known until WDIV-TV aired the video.

Melendez was fired last month and charged with assault. He denies any wrongdoing.

Two other Inkster officers have been suspended.

Residents attending an Inkster City Council meeting last month called for the disciplining or dismissal of any officer who was present during the incident.
