GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A federal judge will allow a Georgia doctor accused of running a prescription pill ring in Harrison County, Mississippi, to subpoena the prescription records of potential witnesses in his upcoming trial.

The Sun Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1KgI0Xr) U.S. Magistrate Judge John Gargiulo has approved the request of attorneys for Dr. Sanjay Sinha, of Woodstock, Georgia.

Prosecutors say Sinha ran a family medical practice near Atlanta when he allegedly began a conspiracy to run a cash-only business with patients solicited in Biloxi casino visits.

Sinha is set for trial July 20 on a 40-count indictment involving oxycodone, hydrocodone, alprazolam and clonazepam. The indictment alleges he wrote prescriptions outside the scope of professional practice several years and gave little or no physical examinations.

The judge’s order will allow subpoenas for records from the Mississippi Board of Pharmacy and the Alabama Department of Health. However, the order said the subpoenas are no excuse to delay the trial.

Prosecutors have said the indictment includes prescriptions for 20 people, though Sinha is accused of writing hundreds of illegal prescriptions. The indictment alleges most of the prescriptions were distributed in Jackson County, with some in Harrison and Covington counties.

Two of Sinha’s three co-defendants were casino workers. They have each pleaded guilty to a charge of possession with intent to distribute. Their sentencings are pending.

The men were arrested after a three-year undercover probe dubbed “Operation Double Down Doc.” The DEA probe included help from the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Mississippi State Gaming Commission and the Biloxi Police Department.
