SAN DIEGO (AP) - A Los Angeles police officer and his girlfriend have been charged with trying to smuggle a Mexican man into the U.S. in the trunk of his car.

A federal grand jury on Wednesday indicted Officer Carlos Quezada Jr. and Angelica Godinez.

Prosecutors say Quezada’s Nissan Juke was stopped in March at the Otay Mesa border crossing in San Diego.

Prosecutors say inspectors found a 26-year-old Mexican citizen in a compartment in the spare-tire area of the car.

The officer and Godinez could face up to 10 years each in federal prison if convicted.

Prosecutors say neither is in jail. After-hours calls to their attorneys for comment weren’t immediately returned Wednesday.
