CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities have charged a 24-year-old ex-convict in the accidental shooting of his girlfriend’s 3-year-old son at a suburban Detroit park.

Jemeer Griffin was shot in the head Monday night at Normandy Park in the Macomb County community of Clinton Township. Marquesha Moore says that her son was in stable condition at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit.

Christian Howard was arraigned Wednesday on charges of child abuse and firearms charges. Police say he had a stolen handgun in his backpack and fired it accidentally.

A judge on Wednesday set Howard’s bond at $50,000. He remains jailed, and it’s unknown if he has a lawyer.

Jemeer turns 4 on Friday. Moore says that Howard is like a father to her son and would never intentionally hurt the boy.
