LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A new bishop has been installed for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lexington.

The Rev. John Stowe’s ordination and installation as bishop was held Tuesday at Cathedral of Christ the King with about 1,600 people attending.

The Lexington Herald-Leader (https://bit.ly/1RekeAI ) reports Stowe said he was touched by the prayers and welcome he received, including hundreds of cards from Lexington schoolchildren.

Stowe succeeds Bishop Ronald Gainer, who was installed as bishop of the Diocese of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in March 2014.

The Lexington diocese was formed in 1988 and serves 50 counties in central and eastern Kentucky.

The 49-year-old Stowe grew up in Lorain, Ohio.
