FREMONT, Calif. (AP) - A rare overnight campground along San Francisco Bay will be the centerpiece of a new multi-million dollar recreation area in development.

The Contra Costa Times reports (https://bayareane.ws/1P0kdln ) Wednesday that the $12 million project will include a campground, recreation and picnic areas, outdoor amphitheater, and a small playground. Developers are breaking ground at the site, an old rock quarry, Wednesday. The East Bay Regional Park District camping ground will have sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay and Silicon Valley.

There will also be access to the mostly complete 500-mile trail along the San Francisco Bay shoreline.

The only large campground near the trail now is in Marin County, which is north of San Francisco.

The old quarry operator is footing the bill under conditions for approval for a quarry expansion years ago.
