MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a northwestern Indiana man was shot to death inside his van outside his apartment by men who tried to rob him while they were breaking into cars.

The Northwest Indiana Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the slaying of 55-year-old Cecil Pendleton Jr. of Merrillville shortly after 5 a.m. Tuesday. He was pronounced dead about an hour later at a hospital.

Task Force spokesman Bob Byrd said in a statement that “several suspects were breaking into cars parked at the apartment complex when they saw Pendleton and attempted to rob him as he was entering his van to go to work. The suspects were seen running from the scene after the shooting.”

Byrd says about 20 detectives are working the case.
