PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) - Police are investigating an incident involving a Pawtucket father who backed his car into his young son.

The 16-month-old victim’s grandmother, Rosa Baptista, says the car was backing out of a driveway when the toddler went behind the vehicle Tuesday.

Police and emergency vehicles were called to Main Street just before 2:30 p.m. An ambulance rushed the child to the hospital where he is listed in grave condition.

Police say officers are in the process of interviewing witnesses and that the investigation is ongoing.

Officials say the boy’s family is by his side at the hospital.
