LOS ANGELES (AP) - Police say officers shot and wounded a man pointing a gun at them from a rooftop in South Los Angeles.

Officer Liliana Preciado says the man was walking on a street when officers tried to stop him late Tuesday.

Preciado says man ran away and reappeared moments later on a second-story roof pointing a gun at police.

Officers opened fire and struck the man, who ran off. Police set up a perimeter and captured the man several blocks away.

Preciado says the suspect, a man in his 20s, was wounded in the torso and hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

No officers were injured in the incident. A gun was recovered at the scene.

Officials did not immediately say why officers initially tried to stop the man.
