PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota’s Civil War Monument east of Capitol Lake in Pierre will be rededicated 95 years after its original dedication on June 1, 1920.

The Capitol Complex Restoration and Beautification Commission approved various upgrades to the Civil War Monument site, including sidewalks, lighting, benches, landscaping and a flagpole.

Two interpretive signs that highlight the monument itself and the history of the South Dakota Grand Army of the Republic were installed at the site, with the help of the South Dakota State Historical Society.

The Civil War Monument was the first war monument on the State Capitol grounds.

The June 1 rededication event will include a re-enactment of the original ceremony followed by a few remarks from Gov. Dennis Daugaard.
