MONTEVALLO, Ala. (AP) - An inmate has been captured by authorities one day after escaping from a prison near Birmingham.

A statement released by the Department of Corrections says 42-year-old Danny Gene Fair was captured Wednesday morning along state Highway 25 in Montevallo without incident.

Authorities were alerted to his presence after a member of the public called the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office to report seeing someone matching Fair’s description.

Fair was reported missing from Columbiana’s Alabama Therapeutic Education Facility early Tuesday morning.

Records show Fair has multiple convictions for theft, burglary and other property offenses in Dale, Calhoun, Crenshaw, Coffee and Etowah counties. He also has a previous conviction for escape in 1998.

Fair was sentenced to nearly 34 years in prison in 1999 and wasn’t due for release until 2023.
