LOUISVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - A St. Lawrence County man is safe after barely escaping from a burning farm tractor.

Steve Billings was driving a large John Deere on a two-lane county road just a few hundred feet from the Louisville fire station when the tractor burst into flames on Tuesday.

Billings told WWNY-TV in Watertown the tractor started vibrating, blew a drive shaft, and he lost control.

Louisville recreation director Dewey LaValley was working outside when he saw the flames, flagged Billings down, and yelled: “You’re on fire, man!”

Billings says he escaped with nothing more than singed arm hairs. He says he was on his way to a nearby field for spring work when the fire broke out.

Volunteer firefighters managed to save a plow, but the tractor was a total loss.
