LIBERTY, Mo. (AP) - A vehicle in Liberty became trapped in a sinkhole after it struck a fire hydrant.

Liberty North High School senior Austin Oard swerved to avoid an oncoming car and crashed into a fire hydrant Wednesday, releasing about 7,000 gallons of water and eroding the street near the Liberty Community Center.

Oard told KMBC-TV (https://bit.ly/1JsDUeH ) that he and his sister managed to escape their car before the sinkhole opened up and trapped his car.

Homes in the area were without water and power for a short period of time.

KCTV-TV (https://bit.ly/1Kj53Re ) reports police say the other driver may be ticketed for causing the crash.
