SHAMONG, N.J. (AP) - Firefighters are working to get a brush fire burning in southern New Jersey under control.

The fire is burning off Route 206 in the Wharton State Forest in Shamong.

New Jersey state police say that more than 700 acres have burned. They say that Route 206 in the area may be reopened around 6 p.m. if conditions improve.

State police had earlier asked residents to evacuate from their homes, but they say that the fire has been contained to one side and there are no current evacuation orders.

Firefighting planes and helicopters were trying to knock the fire down and firefighters were also lighting backfires to try to keep it from spreading.

The fire danger level throughout the state is listed as very high.
