DETROIT (AP) - A jury has awarded $21 million to the family of an 81-year-old woman who died following a brain-related operation at a Detroit-area hospital.

Lawyer Geoffrey Fieger says in a statement that Wednesday’s verdict in Wayne County Circuit Court against Oakwood Hospital comes after the hospital in 2012 mistakenly operated on Bimla Nayyar, who had been hospitalized with jaw joint problems.

Fieger says holes were drilled in the Belleville woman’s skull before it was determined that she didn’t need the operation. He says she was on life support until her death about two months later.

In a statement to WDIV-TV, Oakwood says it’s “very concerned about how the details of this case have been portrayed” and an appeal is planned.
