DETROIT (AP) - Letter carriers are scheduled to leave a Detroit union hall and travel to an area food distribution center as part of the kickoff for an annual food drive.

The caravan will arrive Thursday morning at the Gleaners Detroit Distribution Center for a rally ahead of Saturday’s 23rd Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

Letter carriers, nationwide, will collect non-perishable food items from mailboxes Saturday along their routes.

Residents in Michigan’s Oakland, Wayne, Macomb, Livingston and Monroe counties are asked to place items in sturdy bags next to their mailboxes before 9 a.m. Saturday.

Collected food will be taken from local post offices and delivered to Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan distribution centers.
