COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (AP) - The Lane County sheriff’s office has identified the two men involved in a weekend encounter in their Cottage Grove, Oregon, neighborhood that left one man dead and the other with a gunshot wound to the face.

While there are still many unanswered questions, sheriff’s Sgt. Carrie Carver said Wednesday there is no threat to the public. The investigation continues.

Carver says 64-year-old John Sidman was found dead Saturday evening. Neighbors tell the Register-Guard of Eugene (https://is.gd/MURowP ) that Sidman’s body was found inside his home. The sheriff’s office says 60-year-old Dale Lloyd was wounded. The newspaper reports Lloyd is expected to survive.

Carver says Cottage Grove police responded to a possible “shots fired” report and found the injured Lloyd. They asked for help from the sheriff’s office to search for a possible suspect and Sidman’s body was subsequently found. The sheriff’s office has not said how Sidman died nor what officers think happened.

The two men lived across the street from each other.
