BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) - A 38-year-old woman is facing charges after investigators watched her set fire to her home while her 12-year-old daughter slept inside.

The Bellingham Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1PpR9P8 ) that Casey A. Evans was booked into Whatcom County Jail Wednesday on suspicion of arson.

The sheriff’s office and Whatcom County Fire Marshal’s Office had been investigating a series of small fires near Evans’ home. Officials say Evans was the one who called authorities about these fires, which included a utility pole, a transport trailer and multiple grass fires.

Police say they witnessed Evans walk to the side of her house then back inside repeatedly before flames appeared. Detectives found a lighter inside Evans’ pocket and ashes in spots surrounding the house.

Evans denied setting the fires and would not talk to deputies.
