DETROIT (AP) - Up to 20 older marked police cruisers are expected to be spiffed up and assigned to officers who will take them to their Detroit homes at the end of patrol shifts.

Chief James Craig says Thursday that the program will help deter crime by showing more of a police presence in city neighborhoods.

The Ford Crown Victorias are about 10 years old and are showing some dings. The cars already are being replaced in the police department fleet by newer vehicles.

Officer Baron Coleman was given a 2004 Crown Victoria Thursday. The car received an extensive paint job and some other body work by Sam Hussein of Metrotech Automotive Group in Detroit.

Hussein did not charge the department for the $2,500 in work that was done.
