VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Virginia Beach’s hotel association has voiced its disapproval of offshore drilling.

The Virginian Pilot reports (https://bit.ly/1JSH8eN ) Virginia Beach hoteliers are against exploring for oil and natural gas off the city’s beaches.

Earlier this year, the Obama administration announced a plan to allow drilling in federal waters in an undetermined area somewhere off Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. The site would be at least 50 miles offshore, according to the proposal.

Jimmy Capps, a local hotel owner who chaired an association committee researching the issue, said the members of the committee were uncomfortable with the answers they were getting about the issue.

In March, the city’s restaurant association announced it opposed the drilling because the risks of a spill outweighed the possible benefits the drilling would offer.
