SYDNEY (AP) - Reigning Asian club champion Western Sydney has extended the contract of coach Tony Popovic to the end of the 2017-18 season despite a disappointing A-League campaign.

Popovic, the Asian confederation’s coach of the year and former Crystal Palace captain, led the Wanderers to a runners-up finish in their inaugural 2012-13 A-League season and again the following year.

In November the club won the Asian Champions League title, beating Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal.

Western Sydney, however, followed that with a disappointing domestic season, finishing in ninth place in the 10-team league with just four wins and six draws in 27 matches.

Wanderers chairman Paul Lederer said Friday that “make no mistake … Tony Popovic is the only man for the job.”
