YUMA, Ariz. (AP) - The Border Patrol’s Marine unit in Yuma has acquired its first water vessel.

The Yuma Sector purchased a Riverine Shallow Draft Vessel that will be used to monitor the Colorado River, spokesman Richard Withers said.

The vessel can operate on as little as two inches of water, making it useful in areas of the river that don’t have as much water.

Withers said smugglers and immigrants use the Colorado River to cross illegally into the United States.
