BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a former Gardendale police dispatcher is accused of illegally accessing data being stored in state and national crime databases.

Prosecutors say 38-year-old Derrick R. Thomas is charged with a count of unauthorized access to a protected computer. Authorities say he made inquiries to the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center and the National Crime Information Center at least four times for non-law enforcement related purposes.

Prosecutors say Thomas has agreed to plead guilty to the charge.

Authorities say Thomas could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
