ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Anchorage and its police department are facing a wrongful termination lawsuit from former police lieutenant Anthony Henry.

Lawyers say in the civil complaint filed Wednesday that the Anchorage Police Department conducted secret investigations and broke policies leading up to Henry’s firing, the Alaska Dispatch News reports (https://bit.ly/1zRolgH).

The 23-year APD veteran was put on leave and then fired in March.

Municipal attorney Dennis Wheeler says firings occur when there is just cause, and that the municipality will respond to claims in the lawsuit when it’s served.

“The Municipality respects an employee’s privacy rights, even in the process of termination. However, when the employee chooses to publicly litigate his or her conduct, the Municipality is certainly going to vigorously defend its decision in public and let a judge or jury have the final say. Allegations in a complaint are simply that — unproven allegations,” Wheeler said in an email.

Henry’s lawsuit seeks $100,000, and claims the department retaliated against him after he filed two separate equal opportunity employment complaints when an officer who disclosed a medical condition to Henry was subsequently transferred.

The department claims the transfer was a better use of staff, according to court documents, and led to an internal investigation into Henry’s actions.

Another internal investigation looked into what the department said was his interference with a 2013 sexual misconduct investigation involving the National Guard.

The lawsuit claims another internal investigation looked into claims that Henry made disparaging remarks about the APD. Henry filed a grievance and won when the city and APD refused to let him see documents related to that investigation.
