WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Wilmington’s mayor has ordered the immediate study of implementing body cameras for the city’s police force.

Mayor Dennis P. Williams signed an executive order Friday requiring the police department to study the most effective way to provide officers with body cameras.

Williams, a former police officer, says body cameras can increase transparency and accountability between law enforcers and citizens.

The mayor’s order comes a week after the U.S. Justice Department announced it will provide $20 million to police departments for body cameras.

Wilmington Police Chief Bobby Cummings will oversee the study of body cameras.
