TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - University of Arizona’s observatory atop Mount Graham has a new director.

The university announced Thursday its appointment of Eric Buckley to lead Mount Graham International Observatory.

Buckley was the utility director for the City of Safford for more than 30 years.

His duties will include facilitating effective communication with local, state and federal agencies. He will also be charged with overseeing the observatory’s budget.

Mount Graham International Observatory is a division of Steward Observatory, a research arm tied to the UA’s Department of Astronomy.

The facility supports three telescope facilities in the Pinaleno Mountains and draws researchers from throughout the world.
