TARRYTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - The same company that lights the outside of Madison Square Garden and the Times Square New Year’s Eve ball is installing more than 3,000 LED lights on the new Tappan Zee Bridge.

The Journal News reports (https://lohud.us/1AJUdPm ) Philips will be installing the lights on the $3.9 billion project. Officials say there will be 2,700 color lights that can be programmed remotely and 500 white lights on the new bridge.

Philips officials say the lights can be programmed to change colors to signify special events including holidays and sports team wins.

Officials say the state-of-the-art lighting system is energy efficient and will give riders better-quality light at night.

The bridge is slated to be completed in 2018.
