BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Burlington School Board hired a new superintendent in February, but it’s anyone’s guess as to when he can start his first day on the job.

The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/1IU1T8C ) Yaw Obeng is a Canadian citizen and must secure a visa from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Depending on what type of visa Obeng obtains, he might not be able to begin as superintendent until October.

The contract Obeng signed with the district begins July 1.

Interim superintendent Howard Smith says he plans to remain in his position for as long as the board needs his services.

Smith believes it might be possible for Obeng to begin work as a trainee in July, though he would be unable to assume the role of superintendent officially until October.
